What is Wet Cast Stone?
Wet cast stone is used mainly for architectural features which need to have a high-quality detailed finish and so is usually used on ground floor elements, where people will be able to get up close to enjoy its fabulous surface. Typical applications would be window mouldings, door lintels and sculptural detail at eye level or a little above. The production of wet cast stone is a long and laborious process, in which usually only one piece can be cast from one mould per day, because the mixture is very wet and has to be allowed to dry in its own time to prevent cracking and weakness.
The wet cast method is similar to casting in plaster and provides a close-grained dense surface. The initial mix that goes into the mould is almost entirely made of the stone which will form the finished surface, in a very wet ‘sloppy’ proportion. The mix has to be mainly the chosen stone finish because almost all wet cast stone pieces have to be finished further before use. Get in touch with the Wet Cast Stone Company and we can explain what finishes can be achieved. Some of the final effects can be stunning, from acid etching and grit blasting to very fine hand (or mechanical) tooling and polishing. There is almost no end to the final finish – check out our projects page to see what is possible.
Because of the casting method, it is possible to make large pieces with quite complex internal reinforcements, which can be sunk into the wet mix when the mould is filled. This results in a very strong structure – many people worry that wet cast stone will not be strong because it can look very delicate when tooled or polished but this is far from the case – contact the Wet Cast Stone Company if you think there may be a problem with your casting needs; they will be able to advise you and they pride themselves in seeing solutions, not problems!
Although the manufacturing times may be much longer than with dry cast stone, the methodology is relatively straightforward. The mix is poured into the mould, including the placement of any internal reinforcement structures. The mix is then compacted by using a vibration table to knock any air bubbles out of the mixture and in some cases the mould is subjected to a vacuum, to ensure that every tiny piece of substrate is compacted against its neighbour. The mould is filled by an expert operative at intervals to ensure that it is drying properly. Although the Wet Cast Stone Company are not manufacturers, they only deal with the very best producers because a decorative feature must be perfect.
One of the most important features of wet cast stone is that it is totally bespoke to your needs. When planning a new façade or renovating an old one, talk to the Wet Cast Stone Company and we can give you some help in deciding what you need to finish your building off to perfection. If you don’t have your own manufacturer, we can arrange for the pieces to be made.
